Group Study Exchange Team to Japan has been selected!
On behalf of the Group Study Exchange Committee, I am delighted to announce and congratulate the 2006-07 Group Study Exchange Team that has been selected to go to District 2690, Japan this fall. In addition to their extraordinary credentials, each member of the team has displayed to us a passion for experiencing new cultures, respect for other cultures, a history of service to their community, and the ability to work together as a team. I am confident that we have an outstanding GSE Team representing our district in Japan.

Deidra Goding, Hubert, NC – Emergency Medical Tech and Paramedic
Maritza Ortiz, Fayetteville, NC – Occupational Therapist
Jesus Rodriguez, Fayetteville, NC – Paramedic, Firefighter
Doug Yarboro, Fayetteville, NC – Physical Therapist

The GSE Team Alternates will participate in all of the team training and preparation right up until the day of departure. Each will be ready to go to Japan in case any of the Team Members needs to drop out.

Here is the schedule for the 2006-07 Group Study Exchange Team:

  • Meet regularly as a group with GSE Team Leader Lee Dixon.
  • September 27-30, 2006 –Japanese language and cultural training at UNC-Wilmington with Ms. Yoko Kano.
  • October 9 – November 8 – Exchange with District 2690, Japan
  • November 13 – 16 – Participate at Rotary Foundation Dinners
  • May 4-5, 2007 – Participate at District Conference

Thank you to our dedicated GSE committee: GSE Outbound Chair Beth Steelman, DG Phil Crawford, GSE Team Leader DGND Lee Dixon, AG Kay Gresham, Rudy Mintz, DGN Wilson Ray, and Rotary Foundation Chair PDG Bevin Wall. Thank you once again to Dave Baggett, Lee Dixon, and Donna Shiro and their Rotary clubs for nominating a great selection of candidates for the coming year.

Thank you to all those Rotarians who contribute to The Rotary Foundation so that this opportunity to build goodwill and peace in the world can be provided for these outstanding young people.

District Installation Scheduled for July 11, 2006
All District leadership, club leadership, Past District Governors, and guests are invited to the District Installation Banquet on Tuesday evening, July 11, 2006, at Lily’s Banquet Room behind the Greentree Inn, 5025 Market Street, Wilmington, NC. Reception, 6pm; Dinner and program, 7pm. The event is hosted by the Wilmington Rotary Club.

Ambassadorial Scholars
The deadline for submitting applications for Ambassadorial Scholarships is June 15, 2006 – to District Scholarship Chair Magda Baggett – 910.487.4931 or mbaggett@nc.rr.com. Of course, Magda is currently in Mexico leading the 2005-06 GSE Team. Once she returns, Magda will be happy to respond to your nominations.
