Monday Morning - April 24
April 23rd, 2006 in Monday Morning“All Quality Clubs, Everyone Involved”
Congratulations!
Lee and I would like to extend our most heartfelt congratulations to PDG Bob Breton and PDG Bevin Wall, recipients of the prestigious Rotary International Service Above Self Award. This award recognizes individual Rotarians who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service with an emphasis on personal volunteer efforts and active involvement in helping others through Rotary.
This is Rotary’s highest honor! In our Rotary world of 530 districts, only a maximum of 150 recipients may be selected each year. Our district can be proud that we have TWO recipients this year. The only other honoree of this prestigious award from our district is John T. Capps in 1992-93.
District Conference
I am sure that I share the same opinion as all those who attended the district conference this weekend – that it was huge success – highly organized, wonderful fellowship, plenaries on interesting Rotary subjects, but most of all, a lot of fun!
Kathy Knowles from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada was the keynote speaker. The story of her 16 years of humanitarian service in Ghana resulting in the development of over 150 libraries throughout the country was an inspiration to us all.
There will be wonderful memories of the fellowship shared, of the excitement of the Kinston Indians baseball and shrimparoo, and of the entertainment provided by the cast of the Rotary Musical and our GSE Team on its way to Mexico. Lee and I were honored to serve as aides to Nahid and Yara Chicani of San Paulo, Brazil, a gracious couple who brought an aspect of internationality to the conference.
District Conference Chair PDG Bob Breton was extraordinary in his attention to detail with both the offerings of the conference and with the Rotarians and guests – a wonderful job as usual. Congratulations also to District Governor Phil and Lynn Crawford for inspiring such excellence.
District Sgt.-at-Arms John Kopka never stopped working. He took care of a great many details and made sure that the conference was seamless. Kinston Rotary President-elect Joyce Cherry did a wonderful job as Registration chair, and the Hampton Inn under the management of Lenoir County Rotary President-elect Linda Jones provided exceptional hospitality.
Group Study Exchange
This coming Sunday afternoon, April 30, 2pm, our Group Study Exchange Committee meets in Wallace to interview the candidates for the GSE exchange to District 2690, Japan, this fall. Final deadline for applications is this Wednesday, April 26. Thank you to District Secretary Dave Baggett who has been generating much interest in the Fayetteville area. We still welcome applicants from around our district.
Speaking of GSE – Our wish for safe travels to the GSE Team under the leadership of Magda Baggett departing for Mexico today!

I look forward to serving with you in the year ahead.
Lead the Way!
