Jay Tervo reports on:
The Full Belly Project
Jock Brandis, inventor of the peanut sheller and newly minted Honorary Rotarian, recently returned from the Philippines where he worked with Filipino MIT Grad student Illac Dias to perfect a foot powered model of the peanut sheller. Experiments in the field show that this modified machine is less expensive and more effective then commercially available shelling machines in that country.
On Saturday, August 12, a photographer from Popular Mechanics flew in to take Jock’s picture. Jock is one of 10 prize winners selected by Popular Mechanics for this invention. Over 10 million people read that magazine! In addition, the Full Belly Project is speaking with the UN about having a booth in Washington, DC, for World Food Day in early October!
Jay Tervo says, “Rotary has been a huge supporter of the Full Belly Project. Without a doubt, the successes we are experiencing now are thanks in large measure to the early and consistent support that Rotary has given this project.”

Rotary Foundation Thought of the Week:
Brought to you each week by PDG Bevin Wall, District Rotary Foundation Chair; and reproduced courtesy of www.rotary.org
This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about PolioPlus.
By the time the world is certified polio-free, Rotary’s contributions to the global polio eradication effort will exceed US$600 million. This is the largest private sector donation to this initiative and second only to the US government in total contributions. PolioPlus has made the world take notice of Rotary and what we can achieve. We now have respected partnerships with such groups as UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). We have earned their respect and are seen as instrumental to this initiative. In the words of Carol Bellamy, former executive director of UNICEF: “Rotary’s presence has been vital for the PolioPlus effort. Without Rotary, everything would have been different.”
For more information on giving or program participation, contact PDG Bevin Wall District 7730 Rotary Foundation Chair at Bevin@RLI33.org.
Dr. Jonathan Richmond, District Polio Plus Chair, is on our Speakers Bureau and is available to speak at your club about polio. He has many years of experience working with communicable diseases with the World Health Organization as well as other prominent NGOs. Jonathan can be reached at jonathanrichmond@bsafe.us
