This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Matching Grants.

Matching Grants provide matching funds for international service projects of Rotary Clubs and districts. Sponsored by District 9110 in Nigeriaand the Rotary club of Mount Airy, North Carolina, one grant provided water, clothing, food, drugs, toilets and farming implements to a leper colony in Africa. Over 1,000 people benefited from this project. The Rotarians sponsoring the project designed, supervised and kept the project on target, gaining both local and international attention. As a result of this project, the leper community will have access to basic amenities after many years of neglect. Dignity has been restored to the lives of those individuals living in the leper colony.

Wouldn’t you like to feel that your efforts have brought dignity to someone’s life?

International Projects in District 4180 Mexico Our 2005-06 GSE Team, led by Team leader Magda Baggett, returned from District 4180 in Mexicowith more than a new perspective on the world. They returned with insight into the hardships of life in Mexico, an appreciation for the dedication of the Rotarians they met, and most importantly, with specific humanitarian projects that we can support. This is our opportunity to truly make a difference for not a lot of money. The specific projects will soon be placed on the district website – www.rotary7730.org – in the “FOUNDATION” section. For more information, contact Magda at 910-487-4931 or mbaggett@nc.rr.com. Assistant Governor Nancy Barbee reports Help Needed for Book Drivein India The Rotary Club of Maysville and The Rotary Club of Dhanbad, India, have completed their joint Book Drivefor two schools in Dhanbad. The idea was to involve not only the clubs but the local communities as well in hopes of bridging understanding and appreciation between our countries. Maysville has 660 lbs. of books all boxed and ready to be shipped but now there is a problem. The original quote to ship the books through UPS has gone up. We have $2,000 in our budget but the cost has risen to over $3,000. We have collected over 5,000 books and The Rotary Club of Dhanbad is waiting on us. I am asking for suggestions on how to get those books to India. By the way, we applied for a District Simplified Grant and got it. Your club should apply. It is a simple form to fill out and the District has money to contribute to club projects, so please take advantage of it. This is The Rotary Foundation at work. Just think up a new project and go for it. Contact our District Grants Chair, DGE Wilson Ray at bronco549@aol.com. Attendance reports needed!
