“Rotary Shares” — Rotary International (2007 - 2008)

To our club Presidents and Rotary leaders:

November is Rotary Foundation Month

  • The Rotary Foundation is “our charity” – Rotary’s charity. Please be sure to let your club members know this.
  • Please encourage Every Rotarian to give to the Rotary Foundation this month. We would like to have every one of our Rotary Clubs be 100% Sustaining Member Clubs, i.e. $100 for every member. At the very least, we want 100% of our clubs giving! – Every Rotarian, Every Year! – where everyone gives something. It is tax time, and there is no better way to lessen the tax load than to contribute to the Rotary Foundation.
  • Encourage your club members to attend the Rotary Foundation Events in your areas listed below. They will be fast-paced, informative, and fun!
  • Continue to read our Rotary Foundation “thoughts” each week to your membership and publish them in your club bulletin.
  • Read this month’s ROTARIAN Magazine, particularly the “In Focus: A to Z” section (page 29). “Great stuff” on the Rotary Foundation.
  • Please send the funds to RI no later than December 15th, so that your club is counted as giving to the Foundation.
  • Your district Rotary Foundation leadership and I have given to the Rotary Foundation this year. We have “Led The Way”. Now we need your support!

Attend your Area Rotary Foundation Event!

GSE Team to Return, Wednesday, Nov. 8th, Jacksonville

The Group Study Exchange Team will return from their amazing journey in Japan and will arrive at Ellis Airport, Jacksonville, at 10:50 PM (that’s right, in the evening) after 18 hours of traveling. Everyone is invited! The Jacksonville Clubs especially are urged to be there! It would be great if we had a large crowd to greet them!

Last Group Study Exchange Update from Japan

From DGN Lee Dixon, Oct. 31: “The District Conference we attended in Japan is much different that what I have attended in the US. Large attendance of about 1,600 members in a large auditorium complete with opera singer, pianist and large screen. The RI Representative gave 3 talks during the course of the day, but there was also a talk and video from a Japanese NASA astronaut, who explained about living in space. Yes, he even had a video demonstration on how they use the toilet in space. During this session, many school kids were in attendance also. We had interpreters to keep us informed during their talks.
“Currently we are in Yonago City, The Rotary Club President looks like Kenny Rogers. We move about every two days to a different club, so each day we have either a welcome party or a farewell party. We have visited several hospitals, rehab facilities, temples, museums, Japanese Gardens and scenery that we could never describe. Today we visit Tottori University Hospital, Tominaga clinic and Mount Daisen.”

Full Belly Project Update

Since our appeal last week, 4 more Rotary clubs have stepped up and joined the Peanut Sheller Project as club sponsors: Pres. Tom Bell of the Jacksonville, Pres. Ken Mabe of the Southport, Pres. Hardy Ledbetter of Whiteville, and Pres. Beth Frink of South Brunswick Islands.

These clubs join Beaufort-Olde Towne, Clinton-Sampson County, Maysville, Wallace, Wilmington, Wilmington East, & Wilmington West as official club sponsors of this compelling project.

It’s easy to become a sponsor – $10.00 per member to Our Rotary Foundation and sign a form donating the points! Contact Bevin@RLI33.org for information on how to sign up!

“Polio Plus” National Immunization Day, India, Feb. 9

Rotarians and friends of Rotary are invited to join me in Dehli, India, where we will give the oral polio vaccine to Indian children. By joining this event, you will have a close experience of the India that most tourists never see. In the following week, we will work hands-on as construction laborers on a water project at a poor Muslim village 1 ½ hours from Delhi, yet beyond the reach of most NGOs and social welfare organizations. Some of us will stay for only one week, and some will stay a second week of touring places you would not otherwise get to see. This is an experience of a lifetime that is open to Rotarians, partners, friends of Rotary, and future Rotarians. Rotary Foundation Thought of the Week

Brought to you each week by PDG Bevin Wall, District Rotary Foundation Chair; and reproduced courtesy of www.rotary.org

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about what US$100 can help provide:

• Textbooks for one elementary school in Zambia
• Hearing aids for children in Pakistan
• De-worming tablets for over 100 children in the Philippines
• Three cataract surgeries in India.
• A gift of US$100 or more changes and saves lives every minute of every day.

As we strive to achieve a US$100 per capita goal, it is vitally important that Every Rotarian, make a gift to the Annual Programs Fund, Every Year. When every Rotarian participates, our Foundation will be able to sustain and grow the great work we do around the world and be prepared for future challenges in the years to come.

For more information on giving or program participation, contact PDG Bevin Wall District 7730 Rotary Foundation Chair at Bevin@RLI33.org.

Lead the Way!
