“Reach For The Stars — Learn About Rotary”

More About Membership

Although August is past, Membership and Extension should remain a special time when the entire Rotary family gets a chance to focus on the heart of the organization and what makes it great — our more than 1.2 million members in nearly 33,000 clubs worldwide. Don’t limit our focus to just 31 days of the calendar. Keep membership top of mind all year by implementing a new idea each month. For example, in September why not place a rotary promotional ad or insert in your local chamber of commerce Directory?

Membership Seminars–two are scheduled for this month (September)–plan to attend one that is most convenient for you and your Club members. The events will last about one and a half hours and light snacks will be provided. Plan to attend and bring a crowd with you.

Paging All Alumni

Our District Alumni Chair, Skip Fry, needs your help!! Skip is working to expand the District alumni database to include anyone — Rotarians or not — who have ever been GSE team members, Ambassadorial Scholars, University Teachers Scholars, or participants or beneficiaries of any RI program. This includes past Youth Exchange Students, RYLA attendees, or Grant Beneficiaries, including World Community Service Beneficiaries or Local Community Service Beneficiaries. Rotary Alumni are a prime source of good program speakers and future members and the District alumni database is a great way to make contact information available to each Club.

If you are a past GSE team leader or the leader of another RI program, or if you know of anyone who should be included on the alumni list, please send Skip the names and contact information for any participant. Skip will contact those alums, get current information, and include them in the database. Will make this data available for publicity, involvement, Speaker’s Bureau, and new member prospect purposes. Contact Skip at skipfry@wilmingtonmarine.com.

District Youth Exchange Program

Following are important opportunities and deadlines:

Host Families
(August 2008 - June 2009) — Identification of family due no later than November 2007. Final application due January 2008.
Outbound Students (August 2008 - June 2009) — Applications due no later than 31 October 2007.
Applications for Host Families and Students can be obtained at www.studentexchange.org. Once a club has received an application, a copy should be made for Club records and the original and other pertinent documents mailed to District 7730 YE Chairperson, Lori Harris, 201 Silver Sloop Way, Carolina Beach, NC 28428.

Youth Exchange Training

On 16 October 2007, our District will host three other North Carolina Rotary Districts for an evening of training with ESSEX, our Youth Exchange Coordinator. This is an excellent opportunity for Club Presidents, Club Youth Exchange Officers, Inbound and Outbound Coordinators, our Assistant Governors, and any other interested Rotarians to be updated and trained on our RI Certified Youth Exchange Program. And remember that anyone who has any possibility of having one-on-one contact with a Youth Exchange Student MUST first have a background check conducted. For more information on background checks or this training contact our District Youth Exchange Officer, Lori Harris at lharris2006@yahoo.com.

Recycle The Rotarian

You’ve read the most recent issue of The Rotarian, and now it’s under a pile of magazines on your coffee table. Gasp!! Worse yet, when you tidy up, some of you may even consider tossing the magazine into the trash. Stop. Think about recycling. No, not in the bin. Recycle your old magazines by passing them out to friends, or keep them on hand to give to club visitors, speakers, and prospective members. Attach a letter from your club’s president that lists projects and activities along with contact information. Also, ask club members to place back issues of The Rotarian in their office waiting rooms or lobbies–or leave a copy at your local library.

Rotary Foundation Thought of the Week

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about a Matching Grant project that took place in Israel.

Sponsored by the Rotary clubs of Holon, Israel (District 2490) and Mill Hill, England (District 1130), this grant provided armchair-beds for Palestinian mothers to be close to their children recovering from heart operations at the Wolfson Medical Center in Tel Aviv. Without these armchair-beds, mothers would not have been able to be at their children’s side as they recovered. These armchair-beds, which are in constant use, have provided a saving grace for both mothers and children going through a very difficult time in their lives.

If you found yourself in a similar situation, wouldn’t you be grateful for the provision of such amenities? Why not consider bringing help and hope to a family in need today by applying for a Matching Grant.

For more information on giving or program participation, contact our District Foundation Chairman, PDG Bevin Wall at Bevin@RLI33.org.
