Think Membership–Honk if You Love Rotary

Andy Peters, a 2006-07 RI membership zone coordinator, has a bumper sticker on his convertible that reads, Good-bye Polio–Thanks Rotary! Here’s what inevitably happens when he’s at a gas station or a parking lot: “Someone asks about the bumper sticker,” he explains, and I say, “I don’t have time now, but here’s my business card. Give me your card. How about lunch next Thursday? I’d like to introduce you to some of my crazy friends.” And then what I do is, I follow up with a simple phone call. I’ll say something like, “I hated to be rude to you at the gas station. Let’s meet next Thursday. I’ll pick you up.” Peters, a member of the Rotary Club of Del Mar, California, estimates that in the last seven years, at least 30 people have become Rotarians in his club or clubs in his area as a result of seeing his bumper sticker.

Get Ready For RYLA

Its time to plan for another great District 7730 RYLA Conference–25, 26, 27 January 2008. Start your search now for qualified delegates (High School Juniors/11th Graders). Club representatives should meet with high school teachers and counselors to discuss the criteria for selection. Applications are due not later than 21 December 2007. For more information on this exciting adventure contact our District RYLA Chairman, Keith King, at E-mail KKing@monrovia.com or telephone 252-566-5655.

September is New Generations Month

Part of celebrating Rotary’s Centennial is to promote Rotary’s youth programs and share the story of Rotary to children. When a young person is introduced to Rotary it plants a seed of volunteerism and cultural awareness. For more about this program see your September edition of “Rotarian Magazine.”

More About Promoting Membership

Consider creating a prospective member leaflet or brochure called “What’s in it for Me?” that lists recent speakers at your club meetings, area companies that are represented in the club membership, and current local service projects. For more information or more ideas contact your District Membership Chairman, PDG Johnny Robertson at E-mail johnsfuel@earthlink.net or telephone 910-843-5211.

The Rotary Giving Spirit

The impact of Rotarian’s generosity is everywhere. When you talk with a group Study Exchange team member, an Ambassadorial Scholar or visit the site of a Matching Grant, you realize that our Rotary Foundation is truly creating peace and hope in our world.

Many Rotary clubs regularly contribute to The Rotary Foundation as a part of their club’s annual goals. Clubs that consistently give to the Rotary Foundation have two things in common: (1) their members are more aware and involved in the good works of The Rotary Foundation and (2) their club leaders have a clear and defined strategy to conduct fund raisers and/or solicit funds from every club member.

Weekly Rotary Foundation Fundraising Strategy

Divide and Conquer!–Divide the club into groups of five members. Each member agrees to give $200.00 to the Rotary Foundation for a total of $1,000.00. The group puts each member’s name in a hat and the one name pulled from the hat receives the credit for the Paul Harris Fellow. By doing this once a year or more you can combine fellowship and fundraising.

Give “Every Rotarian, Every Year” the opportunity to support our Rotary Foundation. For more information on devising a strategy for your club or on district giving or program participation, contact our District Foundation Chairman, PDG Bevin Wall at Bevin@RLI33.org.
