Membership or Bust Number One Job: Recruit

It seems that one of the easiest things to do as a Rotarian is to recruit new club members. After all, what could be simpler than inviting someone to your club’s next meeting? But, since it’s not always that easy consider following this example. Membership in the Rotary Club of Loughborough, England, was falling. So the Club created a special team of six Rotarians charged with recruiting club members. The team started a database of 140 potential candidates and invited 25 to lunch. Eleven ended up joining. For more about membership recruiting and retention contact our District Membership Chair PDG Johnny Robertson at johnsfuel@embarqmail.com.

40/60 Paul Harris Fellow Matches — more added due to demand!!!

Because of intense demand and a rush by interested Rotarians to capitalize on this amazing offer, we have exhausted our initial supply of 50 District 40/50 Paul Harris matches. However, due to the generosity of our fellow Rotarians, another 20 matches are now available on the same terms!!! The match requires a $600.00 new money contribution to The Rotary Foundation and our District provides $400.00 in matching points. Don’t let this great offer pass you by–and take this opportunity to support our Rotary Foundation. For more contact our District Rotary Foundation Chair, PDG Bevin Wall at bevin@rli33.org.

Paul Harris on Brotherhood and World Understanding

I remember when a youngster hearing my grandmother tell of a famine which occurred in New England in the days of the early settlers. An ancestor of mine was the only one in his community possessed of a sufficient supply of corn. In opposition to counsel, he continued to sell of his supply to those who could pay and to give to them who could not, answering, “If all of the rest of the world must perish, what comfort to me to live?” (The Rotarian, February 1918)

Your Link to Rotary.org

It’s been seven months since Rotary unveiled its new and improved Web site. If you’ve surfed its pages, you know it holds a wealth of Rotary information and resources. For tips on how to find the information you want, look on page 14 of the May 2008 Rotarian Magazine.

Why I am a Rotarian

I am a Rotarian because back in 1988 someone asked me to join the Rotary Club of Kiama Australia. Since accepting that challenge I have moved residences four times and each move has resulted in another invitation to join the local Rotary Club. For me, joining Rotary provided an opportunity to work with local Rotary people and learn the true meaning of “service”. That service opportunity has benefited me in large measure and I consider myself a better person more able to serve my community. At the same time I have learned the value of good club organization and have made Club service my specialty. I do not have the financial resources to take on many large monetary challenges ( I am a PHF) but I willingly donate my time and service to help make this world a more peaceful and better place through Rotary. (Derek Tigwell, Mudgeeraba Qld, Australia)

GSE Opportunities–2008-09

While the dates could vary, dates of the Madagascar/Mauritius Exchange are 18 April-18 May 2009. Dates of the Spanish Exchange are to be determined.

GSE Team Leader criteria can be found in RI Publication “Program Guide for Rotarians” pages 17 & 18. We are looking for an experienced Rotarian who can take charge of the team that he/she will help to select. Language proficiency/fluency in the host district language is a plus but, not mandatory.
Membership Recruitment and Retention

To keep clubs strong, every Rotarian must share the responsibility of bringing new people into Rotary. Even new members can bring guests to meetings or invite them to participate in a service project. For more on strategy or techniques on recruiting new members, contact our District Membership Chair, PDG Johnny Robertson at johnsfuel@embarqmail.com.

The Weekly Rotary Foundation Thought

The Impact of Rotarians’ Generosity is Everywhere — When you talk with a Group Study Exchange team member, an Ambassadorial Scholar or visit the site of a Matching Grant, you realize that our Rotary Foundation is truly creating peace and hope in our world.

Many Rotary clubs regularly contribute to The Rotary Foundation as a part of their club’s annual goals. Clubs that consistently give to The Foundation have two things in common: 1) Their members are more aware and involved in the good works of the Rotary Foundation and 2) Their club leaders have a clear and defined strategy to conduct fundraisers and/solicit funds from every club member.

Give “Every Rotarian, Every year” the opportunity to support our Rotary Foundation. For more information on devising a strategy for your club or on district giving or program participation, contact our District Foundation Chairman, PDG Bevin Wall at bevin@rli33.org.

Make it your goal today to bring in a new member-and you will be remembered forever by the person you sponsored. Don’t wait for someone to walk up and say “I want to be a Rotarian” because it most likely will never happen. Take the initiative–somewhere in your community is someone who wants to be Rotarian. Find that person, invite him or her to a meeting and invite them to join.
Sad News — Rotarians Passed

Sadly, I announce that the following two Rotarians from our District recently died:

            >>Mary S. Carter, Garland Rotary Club, died on 20 April 2008–she was 89 years old. Online condolences may be sent through www.carterfh.com.

            >>Joseph R. Latham, Jr, Wilmington-East Rotary Club, died on 22 April 2008–he was 75 years old. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.andrewsmortuary.com.

International Service

“International Service has been a focus of Rotary since the early 1920’s. It was Rotary that was the driving force to establish UNESCO. Rotarians were invited to participate in the founding of the United Nations. Rotarians in South America accomplished what governments could not: they literally brought together warring sides in a bitter border conflict between two countries and worked out a peace arrangement. Today, the jewel in our crown is what we call PolioPlus: We have immunized two billion children against polio since 1988.” (Frank Talk 1, p. 46)

Great Reason No. 1 to See The Stars in 2008!!!

Service Projects. Find our how fellow Rotarians developed their service projects by visiting club and district project booths. You can also partner with other Rotarians in an international project or exchange.

The Weekly Rotary Foundation Thought

Challenge Others with a Challenge Gift — Identify one or two generous Rotarians with the capacity to make a major gift to the Annual Programs Fund. With their permission, use their accumulated Foundation Recognition Points to match contributions from other Rotarians. The first contribution is commonly the most difficult one to get. This incentive can help to create a habit, or “Culture of Giving” among all Rotarians!!

Give “Every Rotarian Every Year” the opportunity to support our Rotary Foundation. For more information on devising a strategy for your club or on district giving or program participation, contact our District Rotary Foundation Chair PDG Bevin Wall at Bevin@rli33.org.

District Conference, Williamsburg

Our very successful 50th Annual District Conference concluded Saturday evening with a great meal, great company, comments by our RI Presidents Representative Trustee Peter Bundgaard from Denmark, an awards ceremony and fabulous entertainment by “Elvis.” Elvis in this case was impersonator Jimmy Horne, a Robeson County Deputy Sheriff from Fairmont. He represented well the Elvis some of us remember by looking the part and sounding the part. We couldn’t have asked for a better finale to our Conference.

Earlier in the Conference we were treated to outstanding plenary sessions with exciting lunchtime programs by our own Governor-Elect Lee Dixon on Friday and Astronaut Bill McArthur on Saturday.

Many, many thanks to all who attended and my heartfelt appreciation to the many volunteers who helped to make the Conference successful. We could not ask for more than was provided by District Conference Chair Janet Robertson, her husband PDG Johnny Robertson and Mac and Sharon McFarland from Red Springs. And, of course, our world-famous Sergeant-at-Arms John Kopka. They epitomize the term “Rotary Shares.”

Goodbye GSE-India Team

Our India GSE Team concluded their stay with us at the District Conference in Williamsburg. It was a great weekend having them involved in every aspect of the conference, including a Social Tea event hosted for the spouse of our RI President’s Representative Peter Bundgaard from Denmark. Sunday they were taken to Washington D.C. for a day in our National Capitol, after which they all were to leave for various places in the United States to visit before returning to their native India. We will miss them, but I believe we all are richer having experienced this exchange–getting to know the team members and sharing information about our cultures. Many thanks to everyone who was involved in making this a lasting and meaningful experience.

Put Membership invitation in Writing

Business cards are cheap and can even be done on a home computer. Consider creating a business card printed with your name, the Rotary logo, and the phrase “Be My Guest,” along with the day, time, and location of your club’s meeting. The cards serve as an invitation to attend a club meeting at the club’s expense. Business cards have a way of ending up places where they can be seen, such as on refrigerator doors—but, only if they are first printed. For more on membership ideas, contact our District Membership Chair, PDG Johnny Robertson at johnsfuel@embarqmail.com.

Request from our CART Chairman

Past AG Brian Garrett will meet with the CART Board in Columbia, SC on 7 May. If your Club has CART contributions that are ready to be sent in, send them to him and he will carry them for you. Mail them to him at 1721 W. Sandridge Ct, Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469. He can be contacted at bgpg@atmc.net.

GSE Opportunities–2008-09

During Rotary Year 2008-09, our District will sponsor two GSE Teams. One with District 9220 (Madagascar & Mauritius) and the other with newly formed Rotary District 2201 (Central Spain, including Madrid and the Canary Islands). While the dates could vary, dates of the Madagascar/Mauritius Exchange are 18 April-18 May 2009. Dates of the Spanish Exchange are to be determined.

GSE Team Leader criteria can be found in RI Publication “Program Guide for Rotarians” pages 17&18. We are looking for an experienced Rotarian who can take charge of the Team that he/she will help to select. He/she should have some international experience/exposure and must be willing and able, physically and otherwise, to keep pace with the vigorous program that is typical of an Exchange. Language proficiency/fluency in the host district language is a plus but, not mandatory. Spouses or relatives of Rotarians are not allowed to accompany the Team. The Team Leader will be responsible for pre-departure preparation, orientation, team-building, completion and assembly of all pre-departure documents for Team Members. GSE Team Leaders and Members have significant responsibilities in hosting the Inbound GSE Teams from Madagascar/Mauritius and Spain.

There is no requirement that GSE Team Leader applicants have previously held a district leadership position. Current & future Club leaders, Assistant Governors and future GSE Chairs are potential GSE Team Leaders. This is an opportunity to grow future District Leaders.

Applications can be downloaded from the RI web site www.Rotary.org. Type “The Rotary Foundation” in the search engine, select “Educational Programs”, select “GSE Teams”, see “GSE Team Leader Application” under Related Documents. Applications are due to David Baggett, GSE Chair, by 16 May 2008. Send them to him at 2919 Hybart Street, Fayetteville, NC, 28303 or by E-mail to dbaggett@nc.rr.com. Interviews of applicants and selection of both GSE Team Leaders will be done by 1 June 2008.”

Why I am a Rotarian

I am a Rotarian because Rotary’s values are my values. Attending Rotary meetings and participating in Rotary projects remind me of the type of person I want to be — involved in improving my community, in promoting high ethical standards in my profession and in helping to improve living standards in disadvantaged parts of the world. (PDG David Williams, District 5280, USA)

40/60 Paul Harris Fellow Matches Available — A limited quantity of $400.00 Paul Harris Fellow matches are now available. The match requires a concurrent $600.00 new money contribution to The Rotary Foundation. This offer is extended until the limited quantity is gone, and will be accepted on a first come-first served basis (using the 4-Way Test in case of high demand). These matches are available due to donated points from other Rotarians and from accumulated District points!!! We are starting with approximately 50 matches. All matches must be claimed and paid by 1 June 2008.

In the past several clubs have run cash matches within their own clubs to help fund the Rotarian’s $600.00 portion. For example, some clubs match $300.00 cash with $300.00 Rotarian contribution for a $400.00 District match. Please note that none of the $600.00 cash match can be in points.

To reserve your match or for more information, please contact our Foundation Chair, PDG Bevin Wall at bevin@rli33.org. The information needed will be your name, club name, and address of the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow. The District will help complete and turn in the appropriate forms. Reservations are not final until the funds are received.

The Weekly Rotary Foundation Thought

Supplement your Quarterly Dues with a Rotary Foundation Contribution—want to keep it really easy and simple?? Include an option on the quarterly dues statement for personal contributions to The Rotary Foundation. The most successful clubs include varying amounts ($25, $50, $100, $250 per quarter). Make sure to regularly mention current district projects so members are reassured that their contributions are well spent. When new members join the club, they’re started off in the same way, assuring 100% participation by all members.

GSE Team-India-Update

Our visitors continue to travel across our District, making friends and visiting our Clubs. Now they are in Kinston and have been there since Thursday morning. They went to a Kinston Indians baseball game on Friday evening and loved it. According to them, they have never seen anything like it. They have visited the community college, hospital, and other businesses. Saturday night they met former President Bill Clinton at a speaking engagement in Deep Run. Sunday they rested and prepared an Indian meal and program for their host families.

On Tuesday they will visit Lenoir County Rotary Club and are planning an Indian Quiz program for that Club. Tuesday night they will visit Kinston Evening and LaGrange Clubs (three will go to each). Wednesday morning they will visit the Jones County Rotary Clubs. Maysville Elementary School will host the club members and the Indian Team for breakfast where they will talk to the elementary children about India and tour the classrooms. They will visit Martin Marrietta Rock Quarry, Daniel’s Stained Glass Art Gallery, ECIM Medical Center and Bender-Burkot School Supply. All Jones County Clubs are hosting them. They will leave Thursday afternoon for the District Conference in Williamsburg.

District Conference, Williamsburg

Things are now in place and events have been planned for the Conference this weekend. Thanks to all of you who have registered and we promise that you will have a great Rotary time. The Conference begins with our Business meeting at 10:30 Friday morning. Anyone having last minute questions please contact our District Conference Co-chairs Janet Robertson at janet.robertson@lumberrivercog.org or PDG Johnny Robertson at johnsfuel@embarqmail.com.

One Person Can Make a Difference

A young man was jogging down the beach early one morning and saw an old fellow picking things up off the sand and throwing them out to sea. When he got closer, he saw that a storm tide had washed tens of thousands of starfish up on the beach overnight, and the receding tide was leaving them stranded. The old man was picking them up and casting them back into the water so the rising sun would not fry them. “How can you expect to make any difference to so many thousands of starfish? The sun is already coming over the horizon.” the young man said. The old man said nothing, but hurried over to another beleaguered starfish stranded on the beach and hurled it out to sea. As he ran past the young man, he said, “I made a difference to that one, didn’t I?” (Frank Talk 1, pg 103)

Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI)

Remember RLI–this is a powerful, fast-paced, interactive, one-day course offered to refine a Rotarian’s leadership skills and increase their base of knowledge in Rotary. For a list of upcoming classes and for registration information go to www.rli33.org.

District Newsletter Articles Needed

Please let me spread the “good news” about things that are happening in your Clubs — all I need is a digital picture and narrative and I’ll do the rest. Send information to me via E-mail at bronco549@aol.com.

More About Membership

Maybe your Club should consider obtaining space in a prominent shop window to display information about the Club’s activities in the community. Once you see that list in writing, chances are that even you will be amazed at all the good things that you and your Club members do for the community–and chances are that non-Rotarians who see the list will be amazed, too. Remember, everyone wants to be on a winning team–invite them to on your’s!! For more on membership, contact our District Membership Chair, PDG Johnny Robertson at johnsfuel@embarqmail.com.

The Weekly Rotary Foundation Thought

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about HIV/AIDS projects.

Through a variety of humanitarian grants awarded by The Rotary Foundation, Rotarians around the world have found creative and effective ways to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS and care for its victims. Rotary districts in Colombia and the U.S. have partnered to receive a Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grant aimed at implementing an HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention campaign in Colombian high schools around Bogota. Through the use of guided mural exhibitions, over 200,000 students were reached with life-saving messages about HIV/AIDS. Separately, in an effort to meet the needs of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, Rotary clubs in Ethiopia and Spokane Valley-Sunrise, obtained a Matching Grant to help provide a used van, clothing, food, furniture, a computer and office supplies to an orphanage serving AIDS orphans in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The opportunities to make a difference are limitless. Let’s continue to get involved in international projects of merit.

For more information on giving or program participation, contact our District Rotary Foundation Chair PDG Bevin Wall at Bevin@RLI33.org.

Host Families for Youth Exchange

Please keep searching for host families for two youth exchange students that will arrive in our district in August 2008 for a full academic year. What better way to share our southern hospitality and share one of Rotary’s bedrock goals of spreading peace and goodwill than to have these young people in our homes. Following is information on the two:

BRAZIL
H. Hayasi - Male, 17 years old. His goal is to later attend medical school. Hobbies include soccer, swimming, reading, and music (guitar).

District Conference, Williamsburg, Virginia

There is still time to register for our District Conference which will be held on 18 - 19 April in Williamsburg, Virginia. Plan to take this opportunity to reunite with old Rotary friends and get updated on Rotary programs–while at the same time meeting our special guests Astronaut Bill McArthur and his spouse Cindy. And bring your children and plan to visit the sites in historic Williamsburg. Jamestown and Busch Gardens are only a short distance from our Conference location at the Crowne Plaza Williamsburg Hotel. Register on-line at www.rotary7730.org or contact us for a mail in registration form.
Attractions at Busch Gardens
Emerald Beat Hanana’s Reserve Loch Ness Monster

We Don’t Ask Them — and they don’t join

“The biggest reason why good people don’t join Rotary is that we Rotarians don’t ask them to. Oh sure, we ask our sons and daughters, our close business associates and friends to join sometimes, but we so often don’t even think of our duty as (Rotary) advocates with most people we run across in our daily lives. That doctor I met who had brought his club president into the world has, in 49 years of Rotary membership, only introduced one new member into his club. He told me he had delivered about 1,000 babies in his career. I think at least 10 percent of them would have been excited, elated and deeply honored just as his club president was, if the doctor who brought them into this world had invited them many years later to join Rotary. What a missed opportunity.” (Frank Talk 1, p.xxxii, Introduction)

GSE Team-India–update

At this point, this outstanding, energetic group of visitors is about half-way through their stay with us. Most recently they visited clubs in Fayetteville, Bladenboro, Laurinburg, and Red Springs. They have given many presentations about India and eaten a lot of southern cooking which they profess to love. They spent the day at Ft. Bragg. They also visited St. Andrews College, Methodist University, Cape Fear Valley Hospital and a Winery. The latter part of this past week they moved to Area 2 where they will visit clubs in Swansboro, Jacksonville and Sneads Ferry. After they rest over the weekend at the Ocean Club in Salter Path as guests of PDG Bevin and Pam Wall, they will continue to see the sights in the Jacksonville area before moving to Area 8 later in the week. I’ll update you again next week on their activities.

April is Magazine Month

This is a great time to celebrate the global network of 32 official Rotary magazines, which provide valuable information to 1.2 million Rotarians. Throughout the month of April, our official web site www.rotary.org. will feature stories from different regional magazines.

Grits in L.A. (News from our Governor-Elect)

If you are planning to attend the RI Convention in June 2008, you will need your Southland Breakfast Tickets. This breakfast is exclusive for southern Rotarians in Zones 33-34. Our breakfast will include internationally famous GRITS and all the traditional fixins’ you are used to in the south. L.A. probably has never seen grits, in fact without your Southland Breakfast Tickets you might end up eating sushi and seaweed salad for breakfast. Southland Breakfast Tickets cost $40.00 and are available from DGE Lee Dixon. You can contact him at (O) 252-247-2127; (H) 252-240-0118; (M) 252-241-1868; E-mail ldixon@EDApa.com.

Don’t be left standing around Los Angeles saying “Wish I had some GRITS.”

Funding Your Club’s Project

When we see a need in our community, our clubs are quick to take action. However, as we all know most projects require more than just hard work — they need funding, too. Rotary’s funding guide at www.rotary.org can help us to sort through the types of funding available and learn how to apply for it–just log on to the RI web site, click on the Service and Fellowship tab, then click Fund a project.
Our Founder Paul Harris on Friendship

The time was when the warm fellowship of a Rotary club — the kind of fellowship that melts the icy barriers on Main Street and fuses a community — was a luxury. One could get along without it. Today — in this age of death-dealing devices which could make moles of all humankind — that brand of fellowship blanketing the earth is a vital necessity. (The Rotarian, October 1945)

Foundation Contributions
To ensure that Club and member contributions will be current and well represented as they should be, please send contributions in on a regular basis. For more information about the necessity of prompt reporting, contact our District Rotary Foundation Chair, PDG Bevin Wall at Bevin@RLI33.org.

The Weekly Rotary Foundation Thought

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about how Group Study Exchange can make a difference.

A Rotary district in western Australia and a district in Arizona planned a unique cultural exchange with indigenous peoples from their countries. The Australian district recruited a team of all aboriginal Australians and the U.S. district recruited a team of Native American members. Through Group Study Exchange, these young professionals were able to share their own experiences and learn about the cultures of the indigenous peoples. The Group Study Exchange program is a one of a kind experience for the team members and the Rotarians who participate in sending and hosting these groups of young men and women. Now more than ever we need to increase our knowledge and understanding of different countries and cultures. We are fortunate to have that opportunity by participating in the programs of our Foundation–and we look forward to our exchange opportunities with India and Madagascar!

For more information on giving or program participation, contact our District Rotary Foundation Chair PDG Bevin Wall at Bevin@RLI33.org.

What Paul Harris Said

“Love is mightier than hate. Give it one-half the advertising that hate has had and there will be no more war.” (The Rotarian Magazine, February 1924)

Every Month is Membership Month

If we are to grow our membership we have to “lead the way” and “lead by example.” We cannot delegate this responsibility–somewhere in your community is someone who wants to be a Rotarian. But, they have to be asked–they have to be invited to a club meeting and they have to be invited to join. It will not happen by accident. Please don’t wait for someone else to do it for you. For more information contact our District Membership Chair, PDG Johnny Robertson at E-mail johnsfuel@embarqmail.com.

For more information go to ers@rotary.org.

Help us to tell your Club’s story

Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY, pronounced ee ray)

Our RI giving goal is that every Rotarian contribute at least $100.00 to the Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund during the year. Many clubs add $25.00 to monthly dues, others do it by fundraising, some use matching funds, etc.. Foundation giving is one of the elements of an effective Rotary Club. The idea and hope are that every Rotarian will contribute something to our Foundation. For more information contact our District RI Foundation Chair, PDG Bevin Wall at Bevin@RLI33.org.

The Weekly Rotary Foundation Thought

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about becoming a Paul Harris Fellow.

When you complete your first $1000.00 gift to The Rotary Foundation you can be named a Paul Harris Fellow — or choose to name someone else. your first $1000.00 is a very important benchmark because it gets you started on the lifelong journey of supporting our Rotary Foundation. Each time you reach another $1000.00 level, a new recognition pin is awarded. While some donors are capable of giving $1000.00 at once, many Rotarians make smaller gifts regularly to reach higher PHF levels. Every Rotarian, Every Year is a reminder to all of us to donate generously to the Foundation and to do so annually.

For more information on giving or program participation, contact our District Rotary Foundation Chair PDG Bevin Wall at Bevin@RLI33.org.

More About our Rotary Foundation

“The Rotary Foundation is not to build monuments of brick and stone. If we work upon marble, it will perish; if we work on brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds, if we imbue them with the full meaning of the spirit of Rotary…we are engraving on those tablets something that will brighten all eternity.” (Arch C. Klumph, Founder, The Rotary Foundation)

Our Founder Paul Harris on Rotary

What is Rotary? What is it all about? Rotarians of many countries arise to make answer, but no two answers are alike. Is there no common accord? Yes, there is one; it is like the rumble of a great organ, the roar of a distant sea breaking on the beach. Beneath Rotary’s many and varied activities, there is the unchanging undertone of goodwill, goodwill, goodwill. On this anniversary, my hope is for the continued advancement of goodwill between men and between nations. I have no higher hope, nor do I know of one. (Paul Harris message on Rotary’s 39th Birthday).

The Weekly Rotary Foundation Thought

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about the SHARE system.

Through SHARE, Rotary districts share in the decision making process by choosing which Rotary Foundation programs they wish to support and participate in. Fifty cents of every dollar contributed to the Annual Programs Fund is returned to the district in the form of District Designated Funds (DDF). DDF can be used by the district and clubs to fund Ambassadorial Scholars, Group Study Exchanges, Matching Grants, and District Simplified Grants. The other half of the funds raised through APF-SHARE, remain in the World Fund for matches to Matching Grants, funding for 3-H Grants and the yearly Group Study Exchange award.

When you make a contribution to the Annual Programs Fund you are helping support worthy Foundation projects all over the world and also in your own community.

For more information on giving or program participation, contact our District Rotary Foundation Chair PDG Bevin Wall at Bevin@RLI33.org.
