Jean Mearns introduced Rotary to the Dictionary Project. She loved Rotary and children and she saw the Dictionary Project as a way to improve the lives of the children and everyone in the community.
Proclamation
WHEREAS Jean and Alex Merans were the founders of the Rotary Club of South Brunswick Islands in 1986,
WHEREAS Jean Mearns served as club secretary for the Rotary Club of South Brunswick Islands since the founding of the club,
WHEREAS Jean Mearns introduced the Dictionary Project to the Rotary Club of South Brunswick Islands, leading the club in serving the elementary school students of the community for many years,
WHEREAS in 2001, Jean Mearns introduced the Dictionary Project to District 7730 and went around the district to encourage all Rotary Clubs to participate in this service to our youth,
WHEREAS Jean Mearns provided dedicated service to District 7730 in her capacity as Dictionary Project chair, and
WHEREAS the Dictionary Project has become a tremendous success within our district, with many clubs participating and presenting dictionaries to countless third grade students in southeastern North Carolina; in many cases, the Rotary dictionary becoming the first book owned by a child,
In an effort to honor Jean`s memory and the memory of her dedicated service to Rotary and to the youth of the community,
BE IT RESOLVED that the District 7730 Dictionary Project, as of May 5th, 2007, be named The Jean Mearns Dictionary Project.
