Just step outside and you’re off to a great start — history surrounds the Crowne Plaza Williamsburg Hotel at Fort Magruder! Begin by taking a close look at Redoubt #3, an authentic Civil War earthwork located on the hotel grounds. From Jamestown, founded in 1607, to Yorktown, site of the last major battle of the Revolutionary War in 1781, you can wander at will, absorbing the wonder and excitement of many of the most important moments in American history. February 11th, 2008 in Rotary SharesDistrict Rotary Publicity Promotion
Beginning on Monday, 11 February and continuing until 1 June, WECT-TV, Wilmington will air Rotary Publicity Promotion spots across its viewing area. Why not tie this publicity to your Club’s membership drive?? This is a golden opportunity to do it since each presentation will be ended by a suggestion to the viewer that they contact a local Rotary Club or Rotary International.
This could lead to new members — Develop your own “Rotary Elevator Speech.” Speaker Michael Caruso said his is, “Rotary is the best investment I ever made.” For more on membership, contact our District Membership Chair PDG Johnny Robertson at johnsfuel@embarqmail.com.
Our Founder, Paul Harris on Friendship — Friendship is a natural and willing servant. It will contribute generously to your success. There is no reason, ethical or otherwise, why the great power of friendship should not be harnessed to do its part in the world’s work. (The Rotarian, September 1912)

Maintain the Standard
The second half of our Rotary year begins tomorrow!!! Lets all make a New Year’s resolution to continue support of our traditional Rotary programs. And above all, be careful, stay safe and return to jobs and other activities healthy and prosperous.
GSE Team to India
Our team left Sunday afternoon for 30 days in India as our ambassadors of goodwill–a good group of Rotarians, family and friends were on hand to wish this “all female”, world-class team off for their trip. We all can keep up with their travels by checking postings on their blog at www.teamindia.wordpress.com.

December 23rd, 2007 in Rotary SharesPeace On Earth, Goodwill To Men
Bobbie and I hope you and your loved ones have a very special and meaningful holiday season—and a prosperous and healthy New Year. We hope you will take a moment from your busy schedules to reflect on our many accomplishments at this point in our Rotary year. Please remember the many, many, people that we, as Rotarians, have touched and how the things we did made a positive difference in their lives. Please remember, too, the many, many more we still can touch if we will continue to share our time, our talents, and our resources.
GSE Team To India
Please take note–on Sunday, 30 December at 2:45 PM, our world-class, all female GSE Team, led by DG-N, Nancy Barbee, will depart from Fayetteville Airport for 30 days in India as our ambassadors of goodwill. Please plan to join us at the airport and send them off in super Rotary style–if you have questions in this regard, please contact our GSE outbound chairman, David Baggett by E-mail at dbaggett@nc.rr.com or telephone 910-487-4931.

December 17th, 2007 in Rotary SharesLooking To The Future — (News from DGE)
PETS (a seminar for Rotary Club Presidents-Elect) is just around the corner — March 13-15, 2008, Sheraton Greensboro at Four Seasons, Greensboro, NC. Registration deadline is January 24, 2008. Registration can be done online at www.carolinaspets.org.
Several of our clubs in our district do not have Presidents-Elect identified. If your club does not have a Presidents-Elect identified, please do so immediately and contact DGE Lee Dixon as to your selection. Attendance at PETS is required for all Presidents-Elect. Many clubs in our District send their Presidents-Elect (2008-2009) and their Presidents-Elect nominee (2009-2010) and some even send their Presidents-Elects nominee designate (2010-2011).
“Our PETS is considered one of the best in the nation.” For more information please contact DGE Lee Dixon–(Office) 252-247-2127, (Home) 252-240-0118, (Cell) 252-241-1868 or E-mail ldixon@EDApa.com.
District Goals
One of our District Goals for this year is that every Club participate in at least one community and one international project. Hopefully, by now every club is well on the way to reaching that goal. If your Club isn’t, please move quickly to get it done–we’re almost half-way through our Rotary year. If you have questions or if I can help, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

December 10th, 2007 in Rotary SharesDistrict Rotary Foundation Challenge
Remember, our District will award one Paul Harris Fellowship to the Club with the highest per capita giving to the Rotary Foundation as of 31 December 2007. Just make sure that the contributions remitted to the Foundation are postmarked by 31 December 2007. For more about this challenge or other Foundation matters, contact our District Rotary Foundation Chairman, PDG Bevin Wall at Bevin@RLI33.org.
Don’t Let Membership Growth Stall
For the most part, people don’t like change. Rotarians at club meetings tend to eat at the same table each week, or at least the same area of the room. Many people are assigned to the same committees year after year; and, in some clubs, people would like for their dues to remain at the same level they were twenty years ago. Unfortunately, this preference for the “status quo” has resulted in serious problems for Rotary as an organization. Our members are becoming older, our clubs are often becoming smaller, and, as a result, our outreach becomes more limited. Without positive membership growth, nothing else in Rotary will matter. If you need help with your Club’s membership program, call our District Membership Chairman, PDG Johnny Robertson at 910-843-5211 or at johnsfuel@embarqmail.com.

Polio Eradication — Huge Contribution By Gates Foundation
These are historic times in our polio eradication efforts — The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has entered into a new partnership with Rotary International by awarding RI a challenge grant of $100 million, which Rotary will match, dollar for dollar, over three years. This is the largest single grant ever given to a volunteer service organization and represents a tremendous validation of the approach and success of our PolioPlus program. Read the letter from RI President Wilf Wilkinson announcing this award–it is attached.
December is Family Month
Our Rotary family includes more than a Rotarian and his or her immediate family. It includes our Interactors, Rotaractors, Rotary Community Corps members, our Rotary Youth Exchange, and our widows and widowers. Read all about it in the December Rotarian Magazine–especially check out RI President Wilf’s take on what it means to come from a family of 10 children and how it relates to our Family of Rotary.
Stalled on Membership Growth??
This worked in one club. Looking for ways to jump start the membership drive, club members went to the local bookstore and selected and read helpful books on sales and business development. They found that ideas that work for business work for Rotary, too. In fact, that year, their club theme was “Mankind is Our Business.”
Remember RYLA
Our District RYLA Conference is 25, 26, 27 January 2008–applications are due to our world-class RYLA Chairman, Keith King, not later than 21 December 2007. Applications must be mailed to Keith at 2172 Hardy Bridge Road, LaGrange, NC 28551 or via E-mail kking@monrovia.com. Let’s have a record year attendance of at least 100 this year (93 attended last year).

November 28th, 2007 in Rotary SharesAt Home and Recovering
John T. Capps III–PDG John is at home and recovering well from a recent stay in the hospital in Morehead City. He started this week off by going to church on Sunday, followed by a hearty meal at a local restaurant. Cards can be sent to John and his partner, Jane, at 4102 Plantation Road, Morehead City, NC 28557.
Rotary Foundation Giving This Calendar Year
We need your help–our Zone 33 has a goal that each Club make a donation to our Foundation before the end of December 2007. I would like for us to meet that goal and, as of now, 21 of our 48 clubs have contributed. Please support us on this objective by making your Club’s donation and make sure it is postmarked not later than 31 December. If you have questions concerning this, please contact our Foundation Chairman, PDG Bevin Wall Bevin@RLI33.org.
Bring in New Members
Look for ways to do it–This might work in your Club–Make a list of reasons you believe people will benefit from your Rotary club. People are not going to join unless they understand how it will benefit their lives. If there are no reasons to join your club, start there!! This exercise alone could become the membership magnet you are looking for. For other ideas or more information, contact our District Membership Chairman PDG Johnny Robertson at johnsfuel@embarqmail.com.
