At Home and Recovering

John T. Capps III–PDG John is at home and recovering well from a recent stay in the hospital in Morehead City. He started this week off by going to church on Sunday, followed by a hearty meal at a local restaurant. Cards can be sent to John and his partner, Jane, at 4102 Plantation Road, Morehead City, NC 28557.

Rotary Foundation Giving This Calendar Year

We need your help–our Zone 33 has a goal that each Club make a donation to our Foundation before the end of December 2007. I would like for us to meet that goal and, as of now, 21 of our 48 clubs have contributed. Please support us on this objective by making your Club’s donation and make sure it is postmarked not later than 31 December. If you have questions concerning this, please contact our Foundation Chairman, PDG Bevin Wall Bevin@RLI33.org.

Bring in New Members

Look for ways to do it–This might work in your Club–Make a list of reasons you believe people will benefit from your Rotary club. People are not going to join unless they understand how it will benefit their lives. If there are no reasons to join your club, start there!! This exercise alone could become the membership magnet you are looking for. For other ideas or more information, contact our District Membership Chairman PDG Johnny Robertson at johnsfuel@embarqmail.com.

Rotary Foundation Month

This week begins the Rotary Foundation events. Please support “our charity” by attending our dinners, for fellowship and to “Share Rotary”. The above video shows you one way our Foundation helps people around the world. We, as Rotarians, are devoted to helping those less fortunate. Why? Because we can and should. The world is our community so please support our Foundation by giving at any level you are able.

Rotary Foundation Seminars

These events are among the most important we all will attend this year–please make arrangements to attend the one nearest you and take other club members with you. Many clubs cancel their regular meeting for the week and hold their weekly meeting at the Foundation event–your club can do that, too. Also, some clubs pay for the member to go and bill the member’s for the partner if they go, too. Regardless of how your club does it, just make sure you go.

Seminar will be at The Balcony on Dock in Wilmington (located at 33 South Front Street in location of the old Roudabush Restaurant) 3rd Floor. Enter from the rear of the building where the elevator is located. Seminar will start at 6:00 PM.

Membership Poker

Keep A Poker Face–We called around and couldn’t find anyone who would ante up exact details, but somewhere in New Hampshire, there’s reportedly a membership poker game. Or at least someone posted this suggestion on RI’s Membership Development Best Practices Exchange and credited it to a New Hampshire Club in District 7780. Here’s how they said it worked: The club divided its members into groups, and for five weeks, each group sat at its own table during club meetings. Each club member anted $2.00. When people nominated a new member, they got to draw a card. At the end of the five weeks, the club member holding the best hand won the pot.

The Four-Way Test Still Means Business

Rotary’s gold standard of ethics builds friendships, attracts customers — and helps club members sleep at night. Visit your September edition of Rotarian Magazine–read about how one major Pharmacy chain got hooked on The Four-Way Test and told its employees many years ago that “we use it as a compass around here.”

Go Door-to-Door for New Rotarians

“By going outside your comfort zone, you can discover many men and women who would make good Rotarians,” says Bob Kelley, an RI membership Zone coordinator and member of the Rotary Club of Selma, Alabama. “Just before becoming club president, I realized how many businesses I had never stopped into because I might not have needed to wallpaper a room or practice martial arts.” For months, Kelley made a point of going into every store in town that he’d never visited, and as a result, seven new members joined his club.

Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI)

Remember, one of our District Goal’s this year is that every Club send at least two members to this powerful, fast-paced, interactive, one-day course offered to refine a Rotarian’s leadership skills and increase their base of knowledge in Rotary. The next training event is on 27 October at Methodist University in Fayetteville. Registration cutoff date is eight days prior to the event. For registration information go to www.rli33.org.

Successful Membership Seminars

Many thanks to PDG Johnny Robertson, District Membership Chairman; PDG Bevin Wall, our Zone 33 Membership Coordinator; and Bob Stinson, District Trainer for our very successful Membership Seminars. The programs were well organized and meaningful. And many thanks to Assistant Governors Andy Chused, David Pearson, Mark Lynch, and Magda Baggett for making necessary arrangements, selecting the meeting places and making sure that everything went according to plan. And our grateful appreciation to Club Presidents and Rotarians for supporting these District functions by attending and providing excellent exchange of information and comments. Our District is a better place because of the things you all do.

Keep Thinking About Membership

Collect business cards from individuals who attend a meeting as a guest or speaker and send a follow-up note or postcard thanking each visitor and inviting them back. Check our Rotary vendor catalogs and order a packet of Rotary postcards for this purpose.

Continue to Stress Membership

RI President Wilf Wilkinson was right when he said in the August Rotarian Magazine– “A new generation of Rotarians is essential to every club, and to Rotary. In Some parts of the world, our clubs are thriving, and new ones are forming. But in others, clubs are aging and doing little to attract new members. As members leave, there is no one to replace them — and when a club disappears, there is no one to take on the work that’s left undone.” Lets all “Lead the Way” by “Taking the Lead” on membership–invite someone new to your Rotary today. For more information or more ideas contact our District Membership Chairman, PDG Johnny Robertson at E-mail johnsfuel@earthlink.net or telephone 910-843-5211.

“Reach For The Stars — Learn About Rotary”

Think Membership

Remember Former Rotarians–For some ex-members, circumstances change. Reasons for leaving the club, such as a lack of time, may no longer be valid, and they may be keen on rejoining. Check in with them. Charles Grant is glad his Rotary club did. Grant joined the Rotary Club of North Shore (Houston), Texas, in 1980, when he was selling fire and safety equipment. But in 1983, he had to leave the club because his job classification changed when he went to work at a local community college. At the time, clubs were supposed to have only one person in each job classification. In 1987, he was invited to rejoin the club under a rule that said if a club member held a job classification for 15 years, the club could invite someone else to join with the same classification. And if he hadn’t been asked to rejoin? “I guess I wouldn’t be a Rotarian,” says Grant, who chaired Rotary International’s Rotaract Committee in 2005-06.

Rotary Leadership Institute

District 7730 Hosts RLI in Fayetteville on October 27th

The Zone 33 Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) will be held at Methodist College in Fayetteville on Saturday, October 27th. RLI is a program specifically developed to help with the growth of future Club leaders. This three part program concentrates on two primary areas of understanding, important to the success of every Club; leadership and Rotary knowledge. Plans are to offer all three parts during this session.

Further information on this event and other scheduled RLI events is available online at www.rli33.org Registration should be done also at that site.

Come join us in Fayetteville.

Think Membership–Honk if You Love Rotary

Andy Peters, a 2006-07 RI membership zone coordinator, has a bumper sticker on his convertible that reads, Good-bye Polio–Thanks Rotary! Here’s what inevitably happens when he’s at a gas station or a parking lot: “Someone asks about the bumper sticker,” he explains, and I say, “I don’t have time now, but here’s my business card. Give me your card. How about lunch next Thursday? I’d like to introduce you to some of my crazy friends.” And then what I do is, I follow up with a simple phone call. I’ll say something like, “I hated to be rude to you at the gas station. Let’s meet next Thursday. I’ll pick you up.” Peters, a member of the Rotary Club of Del Mar, California, estimates that in the last seven years, at least 30 people have become Rotarians in his club or clubs in his area as a result of seeing his bumper sticker.
